The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program provides free, IRS-sponsored tax preparation and filing for families with $50,000 or less of annual earned income (wages or unemployment). Trained volunteers work with taxpayers to ensure they receive all of the tax credits for which they are eligible with a special focus on the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is recognized for lifting more families out of poverty than any other federal program.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program will begin in early February and last until early April. The program will be offered at Community Action Southwest’s Washington office on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and at the Waynesburg office on Wednesday afternoons. Appointments can be scheduled starting in January by dialling 211.
211 also has a listing of local Tax Counseling for the Elderly sites that provide free tax help to individuals who are age 60 or older.
Community Action Southwest receives a grant from the Greene County United Way and the United Way of Washington County to operate portions of this program.
